Stalnaker Hall
Designed in the Neoclassical Revival style, the massive Stalnaker Hall at West Virginia University stands high on a hill overlooking the Morgantown campus. Named for Elizabeth Mattingly Stalnaker, Phd., the hall was the first purpose-built dormitory to provide housing for female students. Over the years, the historic hall has been extensively expanded and renovated and is now open to all undergraduate students.
Dr. Stalnaker was a beloved professor of Philosophy and Psychiatry and a prolific author. When she passes away in 1966 at age 82, she endowed the university with a scholarship fund worth almost $500,000, which is the equivalent of $4,750,000 in today’s money.
In the summer of 2023, Brad Stalnaker, an Instructor and Motion Graphic Artist at WVU, recorded a walking tour to share with the family.
