In the early spring of 1782 Seneca Indians ambushed Adam, his father, and Mr. & Mrs. Bush. Adam was killed but Jacob his father escaped. The spot where Adam Stalnaker was killed is marked by a monument between Beverly & Elkins. The correct date however seems to be 1782. Major Randolph Stalnaker, who erected this monument was the great-grandson of Adam and was Secretary of State of West Virginia from 1881-1885. The cemetery grave markers include the graves of Valentine and his wife Catherine and many other Stalnakers. There were no existing marker for Jacob Stalnaker I and his wife so the Association erected one in the old burial lot. The stone was a gift of Norman B. Wamsley. The Stalnaker Family Association built a fence around the cemetery lot and maintains the cemetery.
